Disposable Glove Sizing: How to Plan Business Case Orders

, 3 min reading time

Build a glove size mix from team fit checks and actual usage, then plan case orders and reorder points by size.

A business can have plenty of disposable gloves in stock and still run out of the size people need. Planning a size mix is just as important as choosing the material or comparing case prices.

Use the process below to evaluate fit, record demand, and turn that information into a repeatable purchasing plan.

Start with the manufacturer's sizing guide

Use the sizing instructions for the exact product you plan to order. If the manufacturer calls for a hand measurement, follow its stated method and units. Do not assume that a medium in one brand will fit the same as a medium in another.

A letter size is a starting point for evaluation. The glove's shape, material, and the user's task can affect the fit. Keep the product model and sizing reference with your purchasing records so the team can repeat the check when changing suppliers or product lines.

Check fit during a representative task

Ask users to try the proposed size and move their hands as they would during normal work. Look for these practical signs:

  • The fingers can extend and bend without excessive pulling.
  • The glove stays in place during the task.
  • Loose material does not interfere with handling items.
  • The fingertips and palm allow the required control.
  • Donning does not repeatedly tear the glove or require excessive force.

If a size feels too tight or too loose, compare the adjacent size in the same model. If neither works, evaluate a different approved model rather than forcing everyone into one size. Follow the workplace's requirements for product suitability and use.

Build the size mix from usage

Surveying employees is a useful first step, but actual consumption is a better basis for repeat orders. Record how many individual gloves of each size each department uses over a representative period. Note temporary staff, seasonal demand, and tasks that use more gloves.

For example, a team might record monthly use of 1,000 small, 4,000 medium, 3,000 large, and 2,000 extra-large gloves. That produces a starting mix of 10%, 40%, 30%, and 20%. These figures are an example, not a recommended mix for every business.

If each size comes in cases of 1,000, the example translates to one small case, four medium cases, three large cases, and two extra-large cases before adding any buffer. Verify the actual count for every size; packaging quantities can differ.

Track stock and reordering by size

Give each size its own stock record and reorder threshold. A single total for all gloves can hide a shortage. Use expected consumption during the confirmed supplier lead time, then add a buffer appropriate to your operation.

Count stock consistently and distinguish unopened cases from open boxes. Record damaged stock separately so it does not appear available for use. Before ordering, check what is already on purchase orders and when it is expected to arrive.

Keep fit separate from intended use

A comfortable fit does not establish that a glove is appropriate for a particular exposure or procedure. Verify the product's intended use and any required performance documentation separately. Review exam versus non-exam nitrile gloves when comparing product categories.

If your team changes tasks, products, or manufacturers, repeat the fit review. Keep a small evaluation order separate from a large replenishment commitment where practical.

What to include in a mixed-size quote request

Send the product name or SKU, quantities for each size, required packaging counts, delivery ZIP code, and requested timing. Ask the supplier to confirm each line item rather than treating the order as one combined glove quantity. If substitutions are proposed, review them before approval.
